Independent living provides comfort and engagement for seniors

Revel offers a monthly independent living membership that includes an apartment home, amenities, dining credits and more. Sponsored by Revel Communities.

SEATTLE — “It’s great to have options, but it can also be very confusing when there’s so many options out there to understand the differences between a care-based model, more like assisted living, versus a 55-plus or an independent living model,” said Heather Barlow, vice president of operations and sales, Revel Communities.

Independent living, like at Revel, provides an engaging environment for seniors where they’re offered hospitality services, like transportation, maintenance, housekeeping, dining and programming.

Revel has 13 properties on the West Coast, including three in Washington in Issaquah, Lacey and Spokane.

“Our communities are designed to be a communal experience where residents get to live on their own terms and age with empowerment,” said Jack Waldie, corporate resident experience director, Revel Communities.

The team at Revel encourages residents to work towards goals and provides activities on site, including wellness classes and reading groups. They also urge residents to get outside their comfort zones and do things they may have never done.

The monthly memberships at Revel Communities include an apartment, utilities, housekeeping, transportation and dining in the on-site restaurant. Residents can also travel to other Revel locations for up to seven days per year.

“We like our residents to be friends with other Revel community residents and just feel a part of something bigger,” Barlow said.

Revel provides high-end amenities, and the holidays are a fun and engaging time at the communities. The community choir at the Issaquah location performs to spread holiday cheer, and there are fundraisers and gatherings.

“Across all of our communities, we are so excited to introduce the holidays this year,” Waldie said.

For many Revel residents, the independent living community feels more like a retreat than retirement.

“We have a lot of people pick up new hobbies and introduce themselves to new things,” Waldie said. “It’s great.”
