'The Boys in the Boat' premieres in Seattle at SIFF Cinema Downtown

Cinerama, now known as SIFF Cinema, hosted the screening. The nationwide premiere is on Dec. 25, 2023.

SEATTLE — On Thursday night, “The Boys in the Boat,” a film based on the best-selling book of the same name, premiered in Seattle.

The invitation-only movie screening marks a new beginning for host Cinerama, now known as SIFF Cinema Downtown.

Evening’s Kim Holcomb sat down with director George Clooney and the book’s author Daniel James Brown on Thursday.

The movie follows the true story of eight University of Washington students who, despite all odds as part of the poor and working class, won gold in the 1936 Olympics.

At the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) exhibit called "Pulling Together: A Brief History of Rowing in Seattle," visitors can see artifacts from the 1930s. This includes the gold medal won by UW rower Don Hume in the 1936 Berlin games and an American flag Nazi Germany presented to gold medalist Joe Rantz.

Sequim, Joe Rantz’s hometown hero, is also getting an early premiere of the movie. This happened after students at Sequim High School's Interact Service Club made a TikTok video asking George Clooney to screen it as a fundraiser for the Joe Rantz Rotary Youth Fund to support local homeless teens.

"A Tribute to Joe Rantz" takes place Friday, Dec. 8 at 3:45 p.m. with a screening of the movie "The Boys in the Boat" and a dinner celebration at Sequim Museum and Arts afterward.

KING 5's Evening will also be putting together a special edition episode, "A Tribute to the Boys in the Boat," to air on Dec. 19.

“The Boys in the Boat” officially premieres nationwide in theaters Dec. 25, 2023.
